Brighton-born cellist Riya Hamie is a scholarship student at the Royal Academy of Music, supported by the Sir Elton John Award, studying with John Myerscough.
A prize-winning musician, Riya has performed Dvorak’s Cello Concerto at the RCMJD Symphony Orchestra to standing ovation and has given a recital at the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room. In 2024, she won first place in the Sussex Young Musician of the Year Competition and has performed concertos by Haydn, Dvorak, Elgar, and Shostakovich with leading orchestras.
She was principal cellist of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and has performed at major venues such as the Barbican and Wigmore Hall. Passionate about contemporary music, she recently gave the world premiere of Constantin Raff’s Monologue for Cello.
Riya plays a George Panormo cello, generously loaned by the Benslow Music Instrument Scheme, and is supported by the Westdene Fund and The Pebble Trust.
